It is also extremely depressing, as it shows how hard MAGA will be to combat, as the movement has a strong psychological basis. There is a complementary demographic aspect. The loss of the industrial base in much of small-town America has resulted not only in loss of employment, but also in a resultant demographic shift. The more talented and ambitious young people who grew up in these towns and surrounding rural areas leave for bigger cities, where there is more opportunity. Over generations, this leaves fewer and fewer of the talented people who are needed to stimulate the vitality of communities. The more of those people who are lost, the more depressed the communities become, motivating further emigration of talented and ambitious people. The result is a vicious cycle that will be impossible to reverse without massive input of well-directed aid.
