It is also extremely depressing, as it shows how hard MAGA will be to combat, as the movement has a strong psychological basis. There is a complementary demographic aspect. The loss of the industrial base in much of small-town America has resulted not only in loss of employment, but also in a resultant demographic shift. The more talented and ambitious young people who grew up in these towns and surrounding rural areas leave for bigger cities, where there is more opportunity. Over generations, this leaves fewer and fewer of the talented people who are needed to stimulate the vitality of communities. The more of those people who are lost, the more depressed the communities become, motivating further emigration of talented and ambitious people. The result is a vicious cycle that will be impossible to reverse without massive input of well-directed aid.

Some (paraphrased) examples...

Power comes less from what you say than from how you say it. (How you say it!)

Speaking intelligently or being well educated is considered elitist by many.

(I think it is quite possible that Trump practiced for years... and has probably been imitating other dictators.)

Verify that you heard and understand what they are saying, not so much by saying "I hear you" but by telling them what you heard and clarifying that is accurate. "You're saying (what you understood them to be saying)."

Ask for their ideas. It is quite possible some of them have given much thought on how to solve their problems or what would help. If a farmer spends hours on a tractor seat, he/she will have had many hours to ponder his dilemmas. He may have some creative or stunningly good ideas.

Rural social life often focuses around a local church. I consider that a challenge, but it is what it is. One thing to note: I doubt they appreciate use of the word fuck. That word seems to be primarily for politicians and thugs.

When the narrator mentioned things that rural communities really need -- broadband, health care, vocational training -- there was no mention of which party has actually supported or passed legislation to provide those things.

The answer is obvious, but she also mentioned that actual policies don't change the emotional mindest which is the basis of why they vote for Trump.

Their emotional mindset arose from poverty and the erosion of communities resulting from loss of economic opportunity. Democrats are actually trying to provide those things, but it doesn't matter that Trump has killed projects and funding from the Biden administration. Their mindset is ingrained due to their isolation and the bubble created from decades of rightwing talk radio and Fox News.

That media bubble of propaganda was a glaring omission in my opinion, because it is a major factor in why they believe in Trump and vote against their own interests.
