One would have thought that he would fire her immediately.

Here is my psychobabble explanation. I don't even believe it myself, but here goes.

A) Trump has always had trouble with women. Probably dates back to early family problems.

B) Trump fears strong women. Hillary, Michelle, Kamala.

C) Trump knows his mind is slipping away. Trump is now drawn to Wiles as the mother he never had. Trump is afraid of dying alone and hated.

D) Trump knows at some level that everyone around him has always hated him (including his family and especially his wife). But that was OK because they all feared him. But now, the tiny fraction of his brain that is still functional realizes that nobody fears him anymore, and they are all jockeying to dance on his grave and take over when he is gone. The only person he trusts is Wiles. And he is calmed, seeing her attack practically everybody around him.

In other words, she is that safety blankie that he needs so badly now.
