(21,289 posts)She was diagnosed at age 60, with Stage 2 (lymph nodes). I asked when she had last had a mammogram and she said "5 years". She had a lumpectomy, chemo and radiation and was in remission for a couple of years
But then it came back in her bones, so I knew it was treatable, but not curable. She died 2 months before her 70th birthday. She had a sister who was 5 years older who made it to 96!
I can't help but wonder how long she would have lived if they caught it earlier. I'm 69 now and I've gotten my boobs smashed annually, without fail. I always expect them to find cancer and I had to have biopsies in both breasts in 2012. But so far, no cancer. Early detection is our best protection, but they have so many more treatment options than they did just 20 years ago. I still look at wigs every year though - LOL.
