“ Kate Ferriter left New York’s Hudson Valley for Colorado a decade ago, a few years after her husband, Terry Moore, retired. But when their rental costs climbed, Ms. Ferriter and Mr. Moore relocated and bought a home in coastal Florida.

It was an uneasy fit. “Our neighborhood, it turned out, was very Republican — and we weren’t,” Ms. Ferriter said. “The prejudice, the insults, the blatant racism there was really something,” she added. (Mr. Moore is Black; Ms. Ferriter is white.) Eventually, the hostility and climbing expenses led the couple to buy a home in New Mexico, but they struggled to acclimate to the altitude and dry climate.”
