3. My strategy was to file and extension.

Usually because I didn't have enough money in the bank to pay my taxes in April. That's no longer the case and our taxes are much lower now that i have retired. The funny thing was that the penalties were not that high for filing in October instead of April. It was just that the first part of the year was always slow for freelance writers for some reason. So, we were often caught short in April.

Anyhow, I'm glad things are slower now than they were. A lot more relaxed because of it. My wife and I have done OK over the years, but there were some years that two freelancers' incomes didn't stretch quite far enough. Oh, well.
