IRS Tax Filing Is Working Today

Just got my confirmation from TurboTax that the filing I just finished around Noon has arrived at the IRS and has been accepted. I was a little concerned because I never file on April 15. I guess their computers are on and working today, though.

So, if you're worried about a last minute filing, it looks like they're there and processing filings OK.

Right. It's the not paying with the extension that causes the penalty. MineralMan Yesterday #6

They don't give you much help when you're filing your own forms, but they do 2 forms of verification. (texting & email)

I almost always have filed on the last day, even before electronic filing. I would hate to find the computers not working.

Usually because I didn't have enough money in the bank to pay my taxes in April. That's no longer the case and our taxes are much lower now that i have retired. The funny thing was that the penalties were not that high for filing in October instead of April. It was just that the first part of the year was always slow for freelance writers for some reason. So, we were often caught short in April.

Anyhow, I'm glad things are slower now than they were. A lot more relaxed because of it. My wife and I have done OK over the years, but there were some years that two freelancers' incomes didn't stretch quite far enough. Oh, well.

I always file on 14th or 15th. I don't want to give them my money any sooner.

You mentioned penalties for filing an extension? Never was aware that there was a penalty for filing an extension, unless maybe you didn't pay what was owed with the extension....?

6. Right. It's the not paying with the extension that causes the penalty.

It's not horrendous, though, really, if you're in a low-tax bracket.

I liked doing my taxes on my desktop PC, so I have used TurboTax for many years. I didn't realize they had dropped support for Windows 10 until I tred to download the 2025 version last week.

The Internet version is quite a bit different. However, the program will let you upload last year's saved file and will get you back up and running without much delay. I hate filling out all the personal information manually, so I had put off doing my taxes until today. I was surprised how easy it turned out to be. I was done in under an hour, but I have everything right at hand, so at least I'm not going through papers as I fill out forms.

All of the computer-based tax programs are pretty decent and save a lot of time. They can even answer most of your questions on the fly. Tons easier than working through paper forms and the IRS booklet.
