It was one of the ways they used to compromise thousands of rich and powerful people from around the world and use the information they could get from them, or had on them to gain money, power, and control on a global scale.
It's like The High Table from the John Wick movies; a secret organization of elites that manages a vast criminal enterprise, and manipulates markets, banks, and governments everywhere.
Their goal is to destroy the idea of freedom.
It consists of a small ruling class, a large overseer class that runs day to day operations, and enforces the rules, and a huge lower class of expendable workers. This is all coming to fruition through the development of AI as an all seeing eye that puts absolute power in the hands of the ruling class. It also makes it possible to rule a world of far less people than are on it now.

If they have their way,eventually governments will only exist to do their bidding.
We only have a small window of time to call a halt to this. The biggest block to our success is the willingness of so many tens of millions of people to either let it happen, or actually help make it happen.
