And it's a tragedy no matter whose family that child came from.

Toxic partners can be really hard to anticipate, because sociopaths and narcissists can be really good at appearing acceptable and few people are willing to recognize the difference between a normal range of expressed emotions or uncomfortable situations and the accumulation of red flags.
