(128,941 posts)The GOP so adored Reagan that they named everything after him that they could get away with - but at least they waited until he was out of office or dead, and AFAIK Reagan himself never asked for such honors. I was not a Reagan fan, to put it mildly, but I will give him credit for avoiding blatant self-aggrandizement and observing some basic presidential protocols. And Kennedy became effectively canonized after his assassination, and even Republicans supported naming many places after him. The Kennedy Center was (and I am using the past tense for obvious reasons) a treasured national venue for all kinds of performances, not just those approved of by any particular administration. The Kennedy Space Center was so named in large part because of JFK's support for the Apollo program. Trump wants to leave a bigger footprint than either Kennedy or Reagan because that's the way he is, and he probably knows at some level that the only way for that to happen is for him to do it himself while he's alive and in office. And he wants to be able to see and revel in the monuments and institutions with his name on them because that's the way he is.
