I'm not sure if that raises to the level of insanity or not. But it sounds like the parents were worried about him and didn't want him to be alone.

Dealing with family members who are addicts, have mental health issues or maybe dangerous (or all three) are very difficult. People tend to mask real trouble within their own families. A lot of it is due to embarrassment. As parents, we want the best for our kids, some of that us for our kids and some of it is for ourselves, because many people think that that validates them as parents. It doesn't. I know successful people who had shitty parents. And the other way around.
