Apparently there was a public confrontation prior to the murders.

Nicks name was not on the invitation. But his parents asked OBrien if he could tag along. His behavior, which had often been extreme and stressful, had grown degrees even more concerning in recent weeks. They were reluctant to leave him home alone, in the guesthouse of their Brentwood home, where he was currently living under their watchful supervision.
Hader calmly responded to Nick that he was engaged in a private conversation, according to someone with knowledge of the situation. Nick glared at him for what felt like an uncomfortable amount of time.
Some time later, shouts echoed. All conversations stopped and turned toward the racket. Two men, arguing. It was Rob and his son, having it out over Nicks asocial and unsettling behavior.
Minutes later, the Reiners, mortified, apologized to OBrien and left the party. It has not been determined if Nick left with them. The conversational din returned to the room, but the mood of the evening was altered.
At 4 a.m., Nick checked into the Pierside Santa Monica, where staff later discovered a shower full of blood and bedsheets hanging over the window.

(121 posts)California Probate Code section 250, commonly referred to as the slayer statute, rests on a straightforward principle: a person should not inherit from someone whose death they intentionally and feloniously caused.
If the statute applies, the law treats the perpetrator as though they predeceased the victim. In practical terms, that means the individual cannot take from the estate altogether. They do not inherit under a will or trust. They do not take a share through intestate succession. They do not receive life insurance proceeds, retirement benefits, or pay-on-death accounts.
Gotta wonder if one of the motives for Nick Reiner's actions was financial. He would have to be ignorant of the "slayer" statutes. Who knows what his state of mind is... What if he avoids prison through an insanity plea, however? We will probably be learning more about all of this as the media focuses on the sensationalism surrounding the incident.

Nick has been in and out of rehab multiple times, and lived on the streets according to several articles.
His behavior at the party suggests someone having a mental breakdown, or back on drugs.
My hearts goes out to his siblings. They have to bury their parents and they have essentially lost
their brother also. What a truly tragic, and heartbreaking situation for their family.

(12,483 posts)That's the way to cheer up his family and mourners.
Demented pedo Trump just spitting out whatever lands in the mush that remains of his Alzheimer's riddled brain. There is no logic or real thought going on in his head. Sometimes he does normal things...getting dressed, eating, changing his diapers. Sometimes he does crazy things...calling people names, talking nonsense, wandering around in Japan, climbing out on the roof, sleeping through meetings.
Be glad he gets dressed before he goes before the cameras. Too bad the idiots around him still think he's coherent and do what his mushy brain spits out.

(7,494 posts)but feel certain they would not want their son to get the death penalty. That is not consistent with everything I have ever read or heard about them. I feel so badly for the other son and daughter. It must be hard to handle that much pain.

(6,201 posts)I'm not sure if that raises to the level of insanity or not. But it sounds like the parents were worried about him and didn't want him to be alone.
Dealing with family members who are addicts, have mental health issues or maybe dangerous (or all three) are very difficult. People tend to mask real trouble within their own families. A lot of it is due to embarrassment. As parents, we want the best for our kids, some of that us for our kids and some of it is for ourselves, because many people think that that validates them as parents. It doesn't. I know successful people who had shitty parents. And the other way around.

(7,098 posts)My brother brought the album home from college after he dropped out. He ended up doing pretty well. Unlike the subject of this post. With much more limited resources. Nick had serious mental issues. Yes, so sad. Reiner was great! His wife seemed like a positive force too.

(40,212 posts)It seems they were quite aware that their son wasn't capable of taking care of himself. Whether they also realized that he could harm others, well in retrospect now that's an obvious statement. They surely loved him and wanted to look out for him, but perhaps they didn't understand the inherent danger of caring for a drug addict who also has mental issues.
I'm trying not to be judgmental in this family tragedy.... My own family has dealt with similar mental issues in more than one of my siblings. We've recognized that sometimes the answer is institutionalization, when the safety of the victim and others is concerned. The Reiners were in a position to afford private mental health caregivers (nannies). Such a gesture might have saved their lives.

(9,826 posts)Did some pretty funny impersonations.
An erratic male figure wandered around the party and interrupted conversations, demanding to know who attendees were and if they were famous. Many, like Jane Fonda and Bill Hader, in fact were.
