so allow me to add some perspective. There was a strong upswell of opposition from Indiana citizens of all political stripes, and to their credit 31 of the Senators listened to their voters and acted accordingly. Democrats were especially organized and vocal in spearheading the opposition, but part of the opposition came from rural voters in the hinterlands who feared that a map that carved up Indianapolis would lump them in with big-city voters and dilute their voices. They especially feared the rich monied Republicans of Indy ignoring their concerns.

There is a very strong sentiment against Indianapolis in the General Assembly, as evidenced by its history of passing legislation that disadvantages the city to the benefit of other parts of the state. Of course, that's terribly shortsighted, given that Indianapolis is far and above the most important economic engine in the state.

One final note: The state is already gerrymandered, with Republicans holding 73 percent of the seats in the General Assembly and 80 percent of the Congressional delegation despite only receiving, on average, about 55 percent of the vote statewide. So, a fair map, which our Trump lackey governor Mike Braun claimed this rejected monstrosity would be, would mean Republicans would not have a supermajority in the General Assembly and the Congressional delegation would be 5-4 in favor of Republicans. But, of course, fairness is not the aim of Trump and his sycophants.
