Regardless of what Newsom says - he would seem to be swimming upstream on the issue - given that there is relatively strong legal precedent saying that state and local authority cannot arrest (and/or prosecute?, nor proscribe action?) of federal agents/officers while engaged in official acts.

Senate Bill 627, which would prohibit federal officers from wearing masks during their operations, drew the heaviest media coverage and a dismissive response from administration officials.

“We don’t need to abide by this garbage,” Tricia McLaughlin, deputy secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, posted on X.

Bill Essayli, the acting U.S. attorney for the central district of California, said on social media that the new mask law would have no effect on federal operations. Many California law enforcement groups also oppose the law.
