A late-night procedural vote in the U.S. House of Representatives collapsed after four Republicans broke ranks, leaving President Donald Trumps signature Big Beautiful Bill without the 217 votes needed to proceed. The tally, reported by multiple congressional trackers, stood at roughly 203 in favor and 216 against when the vote was gaveled to a close, with all Democrats opposing the motion.
Representatives Andrew Clyde of Georgia, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Victoria Spartz of Indiana and Keith Self of Texas joined the Democratic bloc, erasing what earlier in the evening had been claimed as a united 220-member Republican front. Their defections drew cheers from Democrats on the floor and forced House Speaker Mike Johnson and other GOP leaders to abandon plans for immediate consideration of the measure.
The setback came a day after the Senate advanced the sprawling package on a 51-50 vote, with Vice President J.D. Vance breaking the tie. Fiscal-conservative holdouts in the House said the bill could add $3 trillion to $4 trillion to the deficit while watering down previously negotiated spending curbs, prompting calls for deeper cuts before they would agree to move it forward.
GOP leaders did not announce whenor whetherthey will attempt another vote. Until at least one of the defectors is persuaded to switch positions, Trumps high-priority legislation remains stalled on Capitol Hill.
