Four GOP Defections Derail House Vote on Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’

A late-night procedural vote in the U.S. House of Representatives collapsed after four Republicans broke ranks, leaving President Donald Trump’s signature “Big Beautiful Bill” without the 217 votes needed to proceed. The tally, reported by multiple congressional trackers, stood at roughly 203 in favor and 216 against when the vote was gaveled to a close, with all Democrats opposing the motion.

Representatives Andrew Clyde of Georgia, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Victoria Spartz of Indiana and Keith Self of Texas joined the Democratic bloc, erasing what earlier in the evening had been claimed as a united 220-member Republican front. Their defections drew cheers from Democrats on the floor and forced House Speaker Mike Johnson and other GOP leaders to abandon plans for immediate consideration of the measure.

The setback came a day after the Senate advanced the sprawling package on a 51-50 vote, with Vice President J.D. Vance breaking the tie. Fiscal-conservative holdouts in the House said the bill could add $3 trillion to $4 trillion to the deficit while watering down previously negotiated spending curbs, prompting calls for deeper cuts before they would agree to move it forward.

GOP leaders did not announce when—or whether—they will attempt another vote. Until at least one of the defectors is persuaded to switch positions, Trump’s high-priority legislation remains stalled on Capitol Hill.

rather than an actual vote on the bill itself---

This vote would not totally kill the bill itself, but it is a HUGE setback
if the House votes not to consider it at all, at this point in time....

(probably based on votes from far-right who thought the bill created too much more debt,
and some GOP "moderates" who didn't want to starve poor people,
and a few others for whatever reason---- haven't read the details yet)

but I do applaud this action! Refusing to even proceed to 'consider' it,
is GOOD NEWS for the American people at large--- for the moment, at least!

There won't be any big "BBB Celebration" on July 4 by the orange muffin in chief---
unless of course, he claims that his BBB was passed, when it wasn't
(and by all his previous conduct, that is NOT outside the realm
of demented possibilities...)

This never happened: "The tally, reported by multiple congressional trackers, stood at roughly 203 in favor and 216 against when the vote was gaveled to a close"

That's the most important indicator. Gen AI loves to make up stories and assumptions. A human should not have made that mistake.

Other indicators are the writing. Using words that aren't common for the topic like the "Democratic bloc."

The source also seems questionable. "Deepnewz"

I only checked the bias of the aggregator, I didn't check the sited sources. No "magic" was involved in determining if it was AI. It's clearly stated.

I used the source anyway.

Because it was a fluid situation plus the reference was time stamped early in the proceedings, so it stood to reason that things could change.

that they stripped out the elimination of the tax on silencers. And as a gun store owner, he can't abide that silencers are currently taxed. Apparently, it's a deeply held conviction of his that people that want to kill other people should be able to do so both quietly and inexpensively.

During his meeting with GOP holdouts, Trump had to be informed that his budget bill did indeed kick Americans off Medicaid, according to NOTUS. “But we’re touching Medicaid in this bill,” one member reportedly responded to Trump. Rep. Jamie Raskin joins to discuss. - Aired on 07/02/2025.

There are more than a few Republican Senators and House Reps who are secretly very, very relieved.

Too timid to vote their consciences, they can now breathe a sigh of relief in private, while expressing “disappointment” in public.

Don’t get me wrong. This ain’t over yet. But they were all in a car going sixty that just ran over a railroad tie, and none of them were wearing seat belts. They may yet get there, but their initial progress just got yanked backwards. Trump will huff and puff, but at least this round, he did not blow the House down.

And with the holdouts saying it's basically not bad enough, it gives a couple of Senate Republicans cover. Maybe they figured out a way to thwart Trump, not that I trust Republicans by any means, but it's likely the only possible solution, acting as if you could only get on board if the bill is somehow made worse.

I mean these are people who nominally represent a section of the population as part of the federal government, and while they're fully capable of lying endlessly, I have no other reason to believe they don't speak for the majority in their districts in this instance. And damn near all the other Republicans openly support taking the bill for its final vote, as ugly as it already is. The only reason Johnson's left hilariously waving his dick in the wind right now is that the senate version of the BUBBA TRUMP bill isn't evil enough.

These paragons of cartoon evil will likely succumb to corruption, so Republicans can probably get this monstrosity passed in the next 12 hours.

medicaid and SNAP recipients, are opposing the 'motion to proceed' on the bill
because it would not hurt those American citizens ' enough ' ....

Publicly they want more 'deficit reduction'---
but such cuts by their "ideals" can only come from the social safety net, and nowhere else

I applaud them for having the courage of their misplaced convictions
to halt this bill, even against the rage of Trump,
although their reasons for doing so are completely against our own ideals...

I’m sure this was because the party allowed his symbolic “no” because it’s meaningless now, he’s done this before. This is probably the one district that’s most likely to go blue in the country. But if they’d needed his vote, he’d be kissing ass like all the rest.
