Think back to 2004. GWB was absolutely terrible in the first debate. In addition, unlike Trump, Kerry was good as a debater could be articulate, accurate and honest. It was interesting that even in the after the debate spin, there message was GWB was not as good as a debater, but he was an "excellent President". They also pointed out that Kerry had been a Yale debate champ - labelling him as east coast elite, though GWB attended the same school.

I wonder if any Democrat would have conceded that while Biden occasionally shined in a debate, debates were most definitely not his strong suit. His strong suits were his compassion to all and his calm competence in managing a talented team. Meanwhile, Trump was a bombastic, confident reality TV star who could spew lies and made up arguments with ease making debating him very challenging.
