It's a further tragedy that there was little goodwill for Mr. Joss in the neighborhood due to his behavior. It seems that he wasn't getting the help he needed. And the fact that they weren't even living there when this happened is even worse. Not to mention that the fire that destroyed the house was reported to be a result of Joss' actions.

This is in no way to excuse the murderer, but it seems to be a story about mental illness as it is about a heinous hate crime.
