Struggle like hell to attain a position.

Develop a medical problem.

Discover the medical problem really stuffs up everything you struggled for, but then denial kicks in. (*)
No plan B, no graceful exit ever considered, thought of.
And you carry on as best as you can, but people notice, people talk.

Going to take a while for John to realize the job needs to be handballed to someone else.
