Philadelphia paper warns Fetterman to take Senate job seriously - 'or step away'

Democratic senator hits back at ‘smear’ after being accused of missing votes and skipping committee hearings

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jun/02/john-fetterman-senate-philadelphia-inquirer

The Philadelphia Inquirer’s editorial board has issued a sharp rebuke of Pennsylvania senator John Fetterman in a new opinion piece, urging him to take his job “seriously” and writing that “it’s time for Fetterman to serve Pennsylvanians, or step away.”

In a strongly worded piece published on Sunday, the editorial board of the Philadelphia Inquirer, which endorsed Fetterman during his 2022 Senate campaign, said the first-term Democrat “has missed more votes than nearly every other senator in the past two years” and “regularly skips committee hearings, cancels meetings, avoids the daily caucus lunches with colleagues, and rarely goes on the Senate floor”.

The editorial board also wrote that six former Fetterman staffers told an Inquirer reporter that Fetterman was frequently absent or spent hours alone in his office, avoiding colleagues and meetings.

“Being an elected official comes with public scrutiny,” the board wrote. “If Fetterman can’t handle the attention or perform his job, then in the best interest of the country and the nearly 13 million residents of Pennsylvania he represents, he should step aside.” “Being an elected representative is a privilege, not an entitlement,” it added. “Being a US senator is a serious job that requires full-time engagement.”

1. That was a scathing OP by the Philadelphia Inquirer's Editorial Board

It still makes me sad because Fetterman is wasting such an opportunity to do good things for his constituents as well as provide a strong, compelling voice for working class families and those who have suffered serious health events.

I have no idea what has happened to the man though I suspect it has something to do with his stroke and the post-stroke depression he was treated for.

However, The Inquirer pulled no punches. Their final line:

It’s time for Fetterman to serve Pennsylvanians, or step away.

This isn't going to go away without a real effort by Fetterman. The excuses are not working.

2. Quite an editorial:

"Being a U.S. senator also requires a lot of travel — mainly across their home state to hear from their constituents. The late Sen. Arlen Specter routinely crisscrossed Pennsylvania, visiting all 67 counties every two years and holding 400 town hall meetings. That’s what public service looks like."

"Fetterman has not had much time for Washington or Pennsylvania. But he found time to jet down to Mar-a-Lago to schmooze with Trump, who he said 'was kind,' 'fascinating,' and 'a commonsense person.'"

"Fetterman has flown to Israel twice in the past year, including a recent all-expense-paid junket to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been accused of war crimes and corruption. He and his wife flew first class and stayed in five-star hotels as part of a fact-finding mission that cost $36,000 and was paid for by a New York-based nonprofit."

"Fetterman finds time to regularly appear on Fox News and other TV talk shows, while also seeming preoccupied with his social media profile."

“'He’s taken two all-expenses-paid trips to Israel, but can’t drive down the street and hold a town hall,' a former staffer told the Intercept."

"Other senators travel overseas but also show up for work in Washington and meet with constituents in their home state. Public service is not about serving yourself."

"It’s time for Fetterman to serve Pennsylvanians, or step away."

3. It's painfully obvious that Fetterman can't function properly, anymore.

He needs to do himself, his family, the residents of Pennsylvania, and the Democratic Party a favor, and allow somebody else to take his place in the Senate. And he needs to do it, just as soon as possible.

4. His story is a tragic one, but he had a LOT of support. Is his wife still behind him?

The last time I heard her mentioned in reporting, it sounded as though she may have had her fill...?

Struggle like hell to attain a position.

Develop a medical problem.

Discover the medical problem really stuffs up everything you struggled for, but then denial kicks in. (*)
No plan B, no graceful exit ever considered, thought of.
And you carry on as best as you can, but people notice, people talk.

Going to take a while for John to realize the job needs to be handballed to someone else.

(*) Not just politics, where this happens.

I was an electrical engineer in a manufacturing facility, he was an electrician. He came back to work after about 6 months, but he just wasn't the same. He made mistakes that he'd have never made before, often forgot things, and I had to spend much my time holding his hand. Basically he just wasn't getting his job done and was a danger to himself and others.

He was given the option of transferring to a desk job or taking early retirement. In my most humble opinion being a US Senator is another job where there can't be much tolerance for not being able to function. In my most humble opinion it's time for Fetterman to step aside.

He mooched off his parents his entire life. Why would anyone expect him to change?
He’s got a new family now. Why quit and go back home without a job waiting for him when he needs to financially support them?
