The only downside is Amtrak trains are notorious for delays. Our bucket trip was traveling from San Antonio to Chicago for a couple of days, then we took the California Zephyr to San Francisco. Stayed with a friend for four days, then took the Coast Starlight down to Los Angeles. We just stayed one night there, and back to San Antonio. We got a roomett. It was small, but we couldn't afford a larger sleeper.
Best part was just sitting and watching the scenery. No worries about maps or road conditions, just enjoying the ride.
