https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/may/13/newark-airport-air-traffic-controllersOn Monday evening the airport had far fewer than the 14 controllers agreed on between the union and regulators
The air traffic controller shortfall, first reported by the New York Times, comes amid a growing number of problems for the hub. In a little more than a week, Newark has suffered three communications blackouts, rendering the control tower unable to track or communicate with planes for up to 90 seconds.
The most recent failure, on Sunday morning, came as government and airline officials have made multiple efforts to reassure airline passengers that flying into or out of the airport is safe.
But on Monday evening, during the 3pm to 10pm shift, the group that manages Newark air traffic from Philadelphia was operating with one or two fully certified controllers, the outlet reported far fewer than the 14 controllers agreed on between the controllers union and air traffic control regulators.

(1,499 posts)The only downside is Amtrak trains are notorious for delays. Our bucket trip was traveling from San Antonio to Chicago for a couple of days, then we took the California Zephyr to San Francisco. Stayed with a friend for four days, then took the Coast Starlight down to Los Angeles. We just stayed one night there, and back to San Antonio. We got a roomett. It was small, but we couldn't afford a larger sleeper.
Best part was just sitting and watching the scenery. No worries about maps or road conditions, just enjoying the ride.

(43,807 posts)So we took first class Amtrak all the way back to NYC, 3days with a little room and a shower and everything. It was glorious, you go to sleep and wake up 500 miles later. This was back in the 80s, but I still recommend it. Its a great way to travel. Ive been all over the country on Amtrak. It used be cool. I dont know it how is now.

(3,561 posts)It's a very relaxing way to travel, more of a social or party atmosphere. True, the trains often run late, usually because of freight train traffic or mechanical issues. But it is a very civilized way to travel, even in coach. The seats are wider and more comfortable than the airplane seats, with much more leg room. There is no check-in process, no metal detector security line, you just show up a few minutes before boarding, with every effort made to keep families or groups together. That describes travel by coach. If you get a sleeper, it's much more private and all of your meals are included in the price. I'd much rather travel by train than fly.

(6,303 posts)Three or four trips a year to MO and IL from TX make it a no-brainer. Less expensive, so much more convenient, fewer people = no crowds. Every time, we get a typical 24-person (?) coach car and share it with maybe seven or eight others at most. Bring our snacks/drinks. No hidden charges for wi-fi, baggage, or bathroom visits (won't surprise me when (not if) airlines begin charging for that last one).
No stress, less expensive, and positively calming at the expense of 36 hours (the amount of hours we'd otherwise waste napping in the hotel room or some such). For us, the train is a major relaxant. I'd recommend it to anyone.

(2,366 posts)Didnt feel like flying so I decided to take Amtrak. I think it took about twelve hours. Im pretty fidgety and I thought I was going to go crazy. The trains are very nice, the ride was smooth, but I would not recommend a long train ride if you get bored or restless easily.

(3,658 posts)Under Repub and Dem administrations, the executive has been sounding the alarm and asking for budget to re-do the ATC system for decades. The budget requests have sometimes been stopped by the OMB before getting into proposed legislation, or it's been removed by congress even when it gets through OMB. Those idiots didn't see it as a priority.
While it's possible that some accidents may happen that would motivate congress to act, I suspect that a bigger motivator might be when some airlines decline to operate in airspace that lacks adequate ATC resources. When airlines stop operating out of JFK/LGA/Liberty/Teterboro, people will scream and the congressional asshole brigade may wake up.
The reason it might get done now is so that Trump can get a win. I'm curious to see how congressional Dems would handle that.

And why Newark with the ICE harassment of the mayor too?
NJ on the verge of a momentous Governor's race this year (I support Rep. Mikie Sherrill). And the Dem primary on June 10th around the corner. Trump just endorsed one of the GOPs this week.
Are the Feds hellbent on targeting Newark and NJ for chaos?
