When Boris Yeltsin was in power, Russian print and broadcast media was pretty diverse. When Putin took power in 2000, he initiated government takeovers of many news outlets, and ordered his stable of friendly oligarchs to take over the rest.

Today, any real conflicting news that finds its way into Russian awareness is immediately attacked and discounted. The Russian people either believe the State News, or they ignore all of it, including the rare accurate story because no one can tell what is true.

The result is that Putin is elected over and over again by huge margins. No cheating is required at the polls. The people vote for him because they don’t know what to believe. We are rapidly heading in this same direction.
