Maria Ressa warns of ‘dangerous times’ for journalism and democracy after move to end factchecking in US

The Nobel peace prize winner Maria Ressa has said Meta’s decision to end factchecking on its platforms and remove restrictions on certain topics means “extremely dangerous times” lie ahead for journalism, democracy and social media users.

The American-Filipino journalist said Mark Zuckerberg’s move to relax content moderation on the Facebook and Instagram platforms would lead to a “world without facts” and that was “a world that’s right for a dictator”.

“Mark Zuckerberg says it’s a free speech issue – that’s completely wrong,” Ressa told the AFP news service. “Only if you’re profit-driven can you claim that; only if you want power and money can you claim that. This is about safety.”

Ressa, a co-founder of the Rappler news site, won the Nobel peace prize in 2021 in recognition of her “courageous fight for freedom of expression”. She faced multiple criminal charges and investigations after publishing stories critical of the former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte.

Ressa rejected Zuckerberg’s claim that factcheckers had been “too politically biased” and had “destroyed more trust than they’ve created”.

Zuckerberg and Stephen Miller, two Jewish advocates for Nazism!

I have to wonder have either of them ever spoken up against Holocaust deniers?

Any country who is trying to limit big tech should be bullied, threatened, forced into submission by the Trump administration!

a version of reality as topsy turvy as that found in Alice in Wonderland.............

We are already seeing a full force revision of history, just look at Trump's speech yesterday......totally delusional, and filled with Trump's Psychotic Fantasies, now about to become the new reality........

He will get the report on his conduct destroyed somehow....as his group becomes entrenched, there will probably be a thermite fire at the National Archives, and the cause will never be investigated...............

When Boris Yeltsin was in power, Russian print and broadcast media was pretty diverse. When Putin took power in 2000, he initiated government takeovers of many news outlets, and ordered his stable of friendly oligarchs to take over the rest.

Today, any real conflicting news that finds its way into Russian awareness is immediately attacked and discounted. The Russian people either believe the State News, or they ignore all of it, including the rare accurate story because no one can tell what is true.

The result is that Putin is elected over and over again by huge margins. No cheating is required at the polls. The people vote for him because they don’t know what to believe. We are rapidly heading in this same direction.

the truth sets you free and that the more truth I have the freer I am. It should come with a warning.
You may not like the truth, the truth does not care, you either accept it or it runs over you. You may
you can outrun it or bend it to your will but sooner or later it catches up and over runs then. It is just
a matter of time.

the bigger question and much bigger problem. We shouldn't be so susceptible to misinformation, especially the obvious bullshit easily debunked by questioning its reality. I know, I know. The dumbing down of society in general is the plan of the oligarchs, but how did we not only let them do it, but how/why did we HELP them to do it?

I'd also like to remind folks that much like Twitter/X, you can leave Facebook/Instagram behind. Or, just use it for an intended purpose: keep up with family and friends, local happenings, etc, and don't use it for news or politics. Seems pretty simple. Frankly, Zuck and Meta can starve for all I care.

until we got what we have today repug oligarchs who own most of MSM and tell their employees
how to cover facts or else. And today we have generations that have never known anything
different. Wish I knew how to give them some critical thinking skills.
