for a new, full six-year term if they wish to remain in the seat. As far as calling for a special election, political experts say the cutoff date to call a special election would be August 3:

"Political experts cited in the report say timing requirements mean the window to call a special election would be tight, with an estimated cutoff of Aug. 3 based on candidate filing and notice deadlines."

The Kentucky Senate primaries have already taken place for the 2026 November election, Andy Barr (R) and Charles Booker (D) were the winners, so it looks like the general election candidates have been chosen for Mitch's open seat.
