Yesterday

and think he's telling them he loves them...in a complicated code, of course. Some of them are so far gone that even when the brick wall falls on top of them, they'll think he's blown them a kiss.

These people aren't stupid, they're just pathetic souls who never grew up and are relying on some Big Daddy, earthly or celestial, to take care of them. It's just doubly pathetic when they fixate on the earthly conmen.
