Echoes from the Progressive Era, about 1898 to 1920s, the time when political machines were broken apart on a local level in favor of city-manager governments in cooperation with many business civic associations - Kiwanis, Rotary, garden clubs. The National Civic League, suffragettes, early labor organizations were part of the mix.

Steyer reminds me of Jerry Brown but then i don't know a lot about California.
