Steyer stands in a long line of wealthy philanthropics who use government for the benefit of people and community. Echoes from the Progressive Era, about 1898 to 1920s, the time when political machines were broken apart on a local level in favor of city-manager governments in cooperation with many business civic associations - Kiwanis, Rotary, garden clubs. The National Civic League, suffragettes, early labor organizations were part of the mix.

Steyer reminds me of Jerry Brown but then i don't know a lot about California.
