TRUMP LOST AT THE SUPREME COURT -- THEN ATTACKED HIS OWN JUSTICES - Decoding The Rhetoric [View all]
This morning, the Supreme Court handed Donald Trump the biggest legal defeat of his second term.
In a 6-3 ruling, the Court struck down the centerpiece of Trumps economic agenda his sweeping global tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the opinion.
And heres what makes this devastating: three Trump appointees Roberts, Gorsuch, and Barrett voted against him.
The conservative supermajority he built told him he exceeded his authority.
What did Trump do?
He attacked them.
Called the justices a disgrace to our nation
Said he was absolutely ashamed of them
Accused them of being unpatriotic and disloyal to the Constitution
Claimed, without evidence, they were swayed by foreign interests
Called two of his own appointees fools and lap dogs
Said the ruling was an embarrassment to their families
Then he immediately announced new tariffs anyway.
This isnt about trade policy.
This is about what happens when a president loses at the highest court in the land and responds by attacking the institution designed to limit his power.
