Volkswagen was very supportive of the union, as I recall. And, yes, I was surprised, but apparently the car maker has long preferred so-called "union shops" because it prevented wildcat strikes and enabled actual dialog between labor and management.

So, deal done, both sides happy, right?

Wrong. The then pre-Fascist Republican Party intervened and quashed the deal.

Checked and found it took place in 2014.
