My breaking point came when my hip was so painful it woke me from sound sleep. I was able to (sort of) sleep through the night sitting in a recliner, but that's a miserable way to go to bed. I had tried all the standard medical remedies without success and really didn't want to have an operation, but I was desperate.
When I awoke from surgery, my pain was gone, and it has never returned. Recovery was surprisingly easy for me--of course, everyone is different--and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I had physical therapy for a long time afterward, and the whole thing was a banging success.
Now my knee hurts pretty badly, but I've heard so many people talk about what an awful surgery and recovery this is that I'm not considering replacement surgery. I have a prescription medication, Nabumetone, which has been very helpful in controlling the pain. I think it's a super-ibuprofen.
It sounds like you are looking for more natural ways to deal with this, and I hope you're able to find something that works, but if you get to the end of your rope and nothing is working, please consider talking to someone who's had a hip replacement.
