'Superman' star Valerie Perrine dies at 82 after Parkinson's battle [View all]

Valerie Perrine, an Oscar-nominated actress who performed opposite Dustin Hoffman's Lenny Bruce in 1974's "Lenny" and starred in Christopher Reeve's "Superman" films, has died. She was 82.

Perrine "passed away peacefully at her home on March 23, 2026, surrounded by love, exactly as she had wished," according to Stacey Souther, director of the 2019 documentary short "Valerie."

The Galveston, Texas-born actress – a former Las Vegas showgirl who eventually made her way to Hollywood – was also known for film roles in 1972's "Slaughterhouse-Five" and 2000's "What Women Want." Her TV characters included Cookie, the mother of Dr. Susan Lewis (Sherry Stringfield) in "ER," and a 1998 episode of "Walker, Texas Ranger."
