After my wife was just diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer, when we were leaving the doctor's office, she said to our daughter and me "Let's walk over to the Farmer's Market down the street and get some ice cream." On the way there she saw a homeless man sitting on the sidewalk with a sign saying that he was hungry. "If you're here when we return, I'll have a sandwich for you", she told the stranger. On the way out of the market she stopped at a hoagie stand and asked the vendor to make her a sandwich for the man she saw sitting on the curb. "Here, take this one. There's nothing wrong with it. The person who ordered it didn't show up for it. No charge.", he said. She asked me to buy the man a bottle of water and gave him both before we went on to our car for the drive back home.
