(13,755 posts)The fact is, freedom of speech is abused and misused, especialy by those in power that claim to be discussing, but in reality are out to supress anyone thatmight have an opinion different than them. Yeah, Charlie was an example, and yes, Discussionist and their proxies/allies at DU are examples.
However, I do think that the minute you say "this speech must be supressed because people will be offended" you open the door for those who will suppress and act like they are doing it with good intent. " The fact is, anyone who speaks for women/minorities/the working class/non Christian can and will be considered offensive. Hell, some in Dixie still feel offended at the "war of Northern Agression." Granted, when the dudes go ahead and say shit, they need to be called out on it, ridiculed, and made to crawl back to their holes, but censoring them lets them fly the martyr flag, which is the reliable weapon of those trying to gain power.
I do not want to erect somethign that will be used against the Ellen Degeneres and Roseanne Barrs of the world. You know that the minorities, women included, will bear the brunt of any censorship rule, whereas, just like those white guys that shoot blacks and never get found guilty (Zimmerman, Bundy, et al) , the same suspects will snipe at us from the rooftops.
