(355 posts)presented your argument well and made it very clear you were not judging or prescribing behavior. I did the same as you, starting out naively, making the comment that it bothered me that so many women were/are attracted to the book, and that I am also bothered by my own submissive tendencies. I guess in retrospect I worded it poorly, in that by "bothered" I mean "bothered in a curious way," if that makes sense. I wonder what these submissive desires say about us and our culture. I never expected the response, which included the suggestion I seek therapy for questioning my desire. I just couldn't believe it. Since when is self-examination frowned upon? I don't want to skim the surface - I want to dive in, even if it takes me to uncomfortable depths.
To give them the benefit of the doubt, I honestly wonder if your argument was over their heads. They seemed not to understand what you meant by "politics," thinking you meant Democrat or Republican and I think they thought you were saying there is a correct way to have sex. They didn't understand your greater point, which was that everything we do is, in a very big way, influenced by the political or power structure. At least I think I have your argument right as I'm trying to recall from memory your words.
I just remember seeing your comments and feeling a great relief that I was not alone. So thank you.
