It doesn't say "day" at all; it does say that the "flock" paid it, so it's not about an actual shepherd.

Of course a lot of the Bible is metaphorical; you just have to decide how much that matters to you, and how much to take as metaphorical if it does (I'd think it doesn't matter to you, from your posts in this thread, for instance "could be pay, could be wages, so I’m pretty sure it means wages" - LOL).

It's not *all* "made up"; it contains various details that are confirmed by history and archaeology. There was, for instance, a country called Egypt, ruled by pharaohs.
