What is the proper role of religion in public life in the US? [View all]

The majority of US citizens are theists.

So what role does belief play in their voting?

What role should their beliefs play in their voting?

The Constitution states:

Amendment I. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

So we can see that the Founders intended that there be no established, or official religion.
