1. I grew up in the '70s being told America is a "melting pot" of the world.

At the time I had the impression the general consensus was that it was a good thing. As I've lived, I have grown to appreciate the fact that we have people from all over the world and nobody gets to say with absolute authority that one group is better than another (though, lordy, how some sure do try). It's been my privilege and honor to meet so many people from other walks of life right here. Those who don't see that are really missing out on one of the greatest treasures of living in the US.
