7. If your phone is unlocked check into buying SIM cards for the areas you will be in

I'm traveling to the UK and hopefully will be able to buy SIM cards for both my tablet and my husband's phone. Since we will be there nearly three months, a SIM card and service for that amount of time will be cheaper than paying Verizon $10 a day for international access!

I've looked at one service called CellularAbroad. They have SIM cards, Data SIM, and phone rentals or purchases. While you may have a different phone number when using the international SIM card, they provide a service that will have calls to your US number transferred to your international one.

They also sell the Talk Abroad SIM card that covers all of the EU and includes 200 countries - and covers all three countries you will be in. For $29.95, that is much cheaper than a Verizon deal!

I have not tried them yet, but so far they seem my best bet for planning ahead. I may just wait until I get to Scotland where we start our UK tour and pick up something in Glasgow but I tend to like to nail down my options well in advance.
