It's sanctioned by the USGA and the PGA as an event in the Tour.

Ironically, it's probably the easiest of the major events to win. This is because the field of players is small and there are many players who are past their prime. It's really a showcase event.

Granted Augusta National is a beautiful and challenging course. But it's much harder to win the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship or the Open Championship in Great Britain. Even the Players is a more difficult event.
