1. I would look for the cultural activities that draw from the left

Nothing is a monolith but I am in a rural part of a purple state.. music, art, sustainability, some types of volunteering, small breweries, restaurants with great food, etc tend to lean left here. Some faith groups (Unitarians, UCC, etc) also lean left, so if you are part of any of that then that could also be an inroad.
