After 47 years, I decided to apply for disability based on hearing loss and PTSD. I went to my local vet center, and came out with a handful of papers and a bad feeling. A friend pointed me in the direction of the VFW, where I got a friendly greeting. They helped me with the paperwork, and it was submitted in April. I honestly thought that was the end of it, until I got a letter saying I had been scheduled for a hearing test and a psych evaluation. I was given transportation to the VA hospital last week, looked at by very nice doctors, and told I would get the result in a few weeks. I had heard there was a one year plus wait time. Not true. The young vets I traveled with were also surprised that things happened so fast. Whatever the result, for me, the VA here in Hawaii seems to be making a good effort.
