Under current law, some veterans who did not serve for at least 20 years or receive VA health services must carry paper documents to prove their veteran status. A form used by many veterans contains Social Security numbers and other details that advocates warn could put veterans at risk of identity theft.

With the recent hacking job on federal data systems where all data on virtually every federal employee past and present and veterans, I doubt greatly that another blip in the federal database for another federal ID will make your data any safer. The biggest threat of identity theft today is the stolen personal data from government and financial databases. With the addition of all health data going to the new mandated healthcare databases they will add a new dimension on what data can be stolen from these 'secure' data systems.
