Ramapo cops returned gun used in murder-suicide: lawsuit [View all]

SLOATSBURG - One day before William Groesbeck III shot his wife to death and then killed himself in their home, Ramapo police gave him back the handgun he used in the shooting, according to a lawsuit.

The wrongful death lawsuit alleges Ramapo police should have never given the gun back to Groesbeck, a retired New Jersey police officer, because he did not have a state license for the pistol. It had been confiscated by police months earlier after a domestic dispute between Groesbeck and his wife, Patricia Nigro, at their 3 Adam Court home.

Nigro’s daughter from an earlier marriage, Diana Santaiti, filed the lawsuit on April 28 in state Supreme Court in New City against the Town of Ramapo, its police department, and Groesbeck's son, Jamie, who is identified as the executor of Groesbeck's estate.
