aug 2014: .. poll reveals Illinois' new concealed carry law, introduced in January, makes a majority of Chicagoans feel unsafe.. Chicago Tribune, 55% of poll-takers said they felt "less safe" with the law permitting licensed gun owners to bear hidden weapons in public.. 15% said they felt "more safe" and 30% said they were indifferent.

Also, just out from cnn oct 15 2015 - 1,028 adults:
(transposed not copied): ... do you think allowing gun owners to carry their guns in public places makes those places safer, less safe, or makes no difference?
Makes public places safer: 35%
Makes public places less safe: 33%

This would presumably mean open carry as well as concealed, so some wiggle room; but only a third think guns in public make the places safer, as well as a third think it makes places less safe.
