He resigned on October 10, 1973, after pleading „no contest“ to a slew of corruption charges. Nixon acted, from one minute to the next, as if he had never even heard the name Agnew. Ten months after that, Nixon was gone, too.

In those days, when crooked office holders were exposed, they resigned, and ran for cover. These days, they run for re-election—sometimes even for Speaker of the House.
