134-year-old Confederate time capsule possibly found under removed Robert E. Lee statue [View all]

RICHMOND, Va. (WSET) — Crews dismantling the pedestal that once held the statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee in Richmond, Va. reportedly found what's believed to be the time capsule left inside the statue's pedestal in 1887, according to Gov. Ralph Northam's office.

The crews made the discovery at 7:11 a.m. Friday while doing work at the site.

Historians believe, based on records from the Library of Virginia, that some 60 objects are inside, left there by dozens of Richmond residents, organizations and businesses. It's believed most of the items inside are Confederate artifacts.
