I start with a very loose slurry and gradually increase the thickness. Once they figure out what that is, some go head first into the bowl. Almost every kitten I've brought in crawls in to the bowl to eat and ends up covered in food.

Maybe try distracting him when he focuses on that behavior. Is there any swelling or redness? I've honestly never encountered that. When Arthur developed rectal swelling, he did a lot of licking, which probably made the issue worse. The vet put him on antibiotics and, thankfully, the problem resolved and has never returned. So, maybe a visit to the vet might get some help.
