They tell us it's okay to plant after Mother's Day, but this year we got clobbered by snow on May 12th and in 2007 we had a hard frost on June 8th! So Memorial Day is really my planting date as well. I have tried starting seeds indoors a couple years now but with mixed success. I might try it one more year, but if my results don't improve, I'll probably just end up buying the starters like I used to.
