1. I'd say this is one of those times when you're fine either way.

No problem cutting back the tips if they're in the way or you want to neaten things up. As you say, any melons starting now won't have time to ripen.

By the way, where are you? My watermelon vines are pretty much over by this time, most of the melons harvested already. Grew small orange, yellow, and pink varieties this year and they have been delicious.
