Sooner or later we all end up having our buttons pushed when some mentally well person makes a statement about the dangers of THOSE mentally ill that slips through our armor.

Knowing the best truth available can help us see their ignorant statements as ignorant. That takes some of the sting out of their stupidity, and it may reduce our need for an aggressive defense that will make matters worse.
